Creative toppings add more sizzle to your burger

With summer fast approaching, our culinary focus shifts from the kitchen to the backyard grill. At my house, grilling means burgers.

Gone are the days when your burger toppings were limited to lettuce, pickles and onions. A fast emerging restaurant trend sees all sorts of creative ways to garnish your burger. I’ve seen peanut butter, French fries, and even mac & cheese used to spice up burgers. Even if your tastes aren’t quite that adventurous you can find a ton of interesting options. With all the infused mayos, spiced up ketchups and interesting cheeses there’s really no need to eat the same burger again and again.

If you’re looking for new ideas, try picking a cuisine you love and tailor your burger to fit the country. Mexican? Easy: add some salsa, refried beans and Monterey Jack cheese. Italian? How about pesto, mozzarella and fire roasted peppers. Greek? Try a kalamata olive tapenade, some feta cheese and fresh oregano.

My favourite burger is a patty made with fresh ground Aspen Ridge beef, a dollop of mayo, some sharp Old Canadian Cheddar and this fantastic Bacon Onion Relish! If I’m feeling really indulgent I might toss a few crispy fried onions and an over easy egg on there, too.
